Al Capone, the notorious most powerful leader of the Chicago Outfit Mafia. Al was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1899. Johnny Torrio was known as the street gang leader which made Al Capone follow him. In 1920, Capone joined Torrio in Chicago where he had become a high ranking lieutenant for the Colosimo mob.
The Prohibition Amendment made illegal brewing, the distilling and distribution of beer and liquor, viewed as “growth industries.” Torrio and Al wanted to take full advantage of opportunities. Al Capone was Torrios right hand man. In 1925, Capone became the new boss when Torrio was wounded in an assassination attempt. He surrendered control and retired back Brooklyn. Capone had built a new fearsome reputation among ruthless gang enemies.That reputation was growing increasingly as rival gangs were eliminated or nullified by the Capone mob.

Big JimThe Outfits was formed in the 1920’s. “Big Jim” of Giacomo Colosimo who had ran hundreds of brothels gained power. He is Nephew Giovanni Torrio or “Papa Johnny” was brought into the family business and introduced famous Alphonse “Scarface” Capone.

Papa Johnny The Outfit began making a big business of selling liquor underground. Torrio killed Colosimo for not keeping or staying in the beer business for money. Started the “beer wars” which was the most violent episode of organized crime in American History. The Outfit also had focuses on gambling and prostitution. Ethnic conflicts developed once crime began to grow. Italians versus the Irish. The Irish leader Dean O’Banion was killed for stealing half a million dollars from Torrio. Urban Warfare developed.

Frank NittiAfter the war that lasted five years Capone left in 1932 and Frank Nitti the “enforcer” was now the leader of the Outfit. Prostitution, labor racketeering and gambling began to grow thanks to Nitt setting up different organization across the United States. The Chicago Outfit was growing in all aspects and especially in Las Vegas. It was at its peak in the 1960 but started to slowly fall because of conflicts within the group and because of the FBI in 2007. “Family Secrets” spilled and the Outfit lost most of its power.
